Hail, Fedora!

November 26th, 2008

I have been running the 64bit version of Fedora 10 on a test machine for a while, and this morning when Fedora 10 was released I decided to go try my luck at downloading the 32bit version so I could upgrade my main box. I was very surprised to find the /get-fedora page had been reorganized a bit:

To the right there are new buttons advertising very clearly and happily for “KDE Fans Go Here” and that if you “Have a PowerPC? Go here!” or just to “See All Downloads”. At last! KDE and PowerPC users getting a tip of the hat (yes, I’m strongly biased as those are the two versions of Fedora I use), but more importantly, people coming to that page are getting a very pretty and simply guide to where they need to go.

Furthermore, a bit lower on the page was a clear and concise note that if you upgrading your Fedora system, that was OK too, and a link was provided to read about how exactly the upgrade process goes.

the Fedora 10 Download Page Rocks

Wow. This was one of the best designed and executed download pages for a Linux distro I have seen in a long time… if not ever. Truly, this was easy, simple, attractive, not-confusing, and pleasure to look at and navigate through. I don’t know who is responsible for this — a web team or a division of the art team — but it was well done.

MythDora

July 29th, 2008

MythTV is one of those shining stars of Free Software innovation, but it’s also gained a reputation for being really difficult to set up! Well, Skirlet and Klaatu have no idea about setting up MythTV, but their good friend Hammer does — and his Myth distro of choice is MythDora, which, using Fedora as its foundation, makes getting a Myth Box up and running a pleasure rather than a chore.
